Key Characteristics

  • Gymnosperm, reproduces by layering and tipping, source of vitamin C, shade tolerant
  • Flat, scalelike, yellowish green leaves, opposite, with conspicuous glandular spots appressed to and hiding the stem; leafy shoots flat, in fan-shaped sprays
  • Bark in shreddy, linear strips
  • Seed cones small, oblong, with few, dull brown scales
  • Found in circumneutral or basic swamps, along streams and lake shores with calcareous soils
