Key Characteristics
- Erect shrubs, up to 0.3-2 meters tall, stems upright, stiff, wandlike, single or branches, tough, narrow, and similar looking to goldenrod
- Leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate, sharply and finely serrate, firm, petioles short
- Fruit an aggregate of follicles, flowers white
- Twigs slender, yellowish brown, more or less angled
- Winter buds small, sessile, globose to fusiform
- Prefers low wet sites
