Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are opposite, pinnate, with long slender leaflets, sharp toothed like a saw blade, acuminate, and almost sessile
  • Twig has large leaf scars and large opposite purple buds
  • This shrub is situated on mesic to dry/mesic sites
  • Fruit is a red drupe - edible, but surrounded by poisonous vegetative parts
