Key Characteristics

  • Shrub, water seed dispersal, reproduces by fragmentation, shade intolerant
  • Bark thin, smooth, lenticels large and conspicuous; green to brown
  • Leaves alternate, simple, linear lanceolate, acuminate, teeth sharp, widely spaced and outward pointing with glands on each tooth
  • Twigs slender, reddish brown, usually glabrous
  • Winter buds very small, appressed, terminal bud absent; with 1 visible scale
