Key Characteristics

  • Upright spreading, climbing or creeping shrubs, up to 2 meters high
  • Branches usually armed with prickles
  • Leaves alternate, compound, odd-pinnate; stipules fused with the petiole base
  • Leaflets 3-11, variable in shape, serrate or toothed, thin and firm, green
  • Twigs slender, usually green, smooth or in most species armed with bristles or paired prickles, pit relatively large, brown
  • Winter buds small, ovoid
  • When uncultivated, flowers have five petals
  • Fruit are rosehips
