Key Characteristics

  • Erect or spreading low shrub, up to 1.5 meters tall
  • Branches with 1-3 slender spines 0.5-1 cm long at each node; lower stems often very prickly along internodes
  • Leaves alternate, simple, crenate-dentate, often sharply cleft
  • Twigs slender, light brown
  • Winter buds elongte 5-6 mm long
  • Found on both wet and dry sites, but dry mesic is preferred
  • Reproduce clonally by layering
