Key Characteristics

  • Clonal shrub or small tree up to 10 meters high
  • Bark thin, smooth, greenish brown
  • Leaves alternate, pinnately compound; rachis winged between leaflets, pubescent, very lustrous
  • Twigs stout, reddish-pubescent, leaf scars horseshoe-shaped below the bud (not covering), not as stout as other sumacs
  • Winter buds pubescent, reddish brown
  • Fruit an edible but sour drupe
