Key Characteristics

  • Leaves very shiny, dark green above and yellow green beneath, lower surface scurfy-pubescent
  • Inner bark bright yellow or orange, very bitter
  • Acorn cup deep, bowl-shaped, with dull, light brown, loosely fitting scales, squarish at the tips, forming a slightly fringed cup
  • Dry, upland habitats
  • Buds appear fuzzy
