Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate (but usually clustered) and simple, similar to Q. muehlenbergii, obovate, with large rounded teeth
  • Fruit is a large acorn with a thin cap shaped like a German WWI helmet, it looks textured more than distinctly scaly
  • Bark is drab gray, with deep wide furrows like
  • This tree is intermediately shade tolerant and found on dry to dry/mesic sites
