Key Characteristics

  • Leaf lobing highly variable, but usually at least one leaf per shoot with a broad, crenately toothed upper blade and a pair of opposing, very deep sinuses; other leaves with 2-3 pairs of deeply cut sinuses
  • Leaves finely white-pubescent beneath
  • Acorns seated in a massive, deep, conspicuously fringed cup
