Key Characteristics

  • Leaves alternate / clustered, simple, unlobed, ovate, entire, bristle tipped, and marquescent, meaning they remain on the tree even after dead
  • Bark is intermediate between velutina and rubra
  • Fruit is a small acorn, similar to Q. velutina, with complete scale tips
  • Found on floodplain sites, Michigan is it's northern extent
