Key Characteristics

  • Leaf blades long and narrowly ovate; finely serrate with incurved teeth; dense reddish brown pubescence on lower surface along the midrib; petioles with small red glands near the blade base
  • Bark broken into rough irregular plates resembling "burnt potato chips"
  • Fruit a small, globose drupe, nearly black, flower parts (calyx) conspicuous at base
