Key Characteristics

  • Bark looks like peeling silver dollars
  • Fruit is a large cone, with flat papery scales, and a notched tip, looking like beaver teeth
  • Needles are lush green, sharp, dense, uniformly distributed
  • Shade tolerant and found on mesic sites
  • Tall trunk with low swooping lateral branches, and twigs drooping off of them
