  • Shrub, fruit an aggregate, shade intolerant
  • Bark of larger branches exfoliating in numerous long, very think strips, shreddy
  • Leaves alternate, simple, orbicular, crenate to dentate
  • Twigs slender, brownish, flaky bark, 5-lined at the nodes
  • Winter buds small, conical-oblong or ovoid, pointed, sessile; lateral buds appressed
