Notes

Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are large, alternative, simple, acuminate, entire, and pinnately veined
  • Fruit is a large cluster of what look like pumpkin seeds, or a black peppery smelling "cucumber"
  • Twigs are smooth, curvy, pale tan or green, and light with white silky naked buds, v-shaped leaf scars, and sparkly pith
  • This large tree has bark similar to white oak but dark cinnamon colored underneath, generally found on flood plain sites
