Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate and simple, with entire margins, dark glossy upper surfaces, and long acuminate tips
  • Trunk retains dead lower branches
  • Young shoots tend to have single axillary thorns
  • Bark is light brown but orange inside and orange especially on root bark
  • Fruit is large, knobby, green, like a brain, technically an aggregate of drupes - historically dispersed by mastodons
  • Twigs have spines, are light olive green with small buds
