Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate and simple, star shaped with 5-7 sharp serrate lobes
  • This tree grows excurrently with a long conical crown
  • Twigs have corky ridges or wings, and are aromatic, with angled or star shaped pith
  • These trees are generally found planted or near river floodplains
  • Buds are large, shiny, red or green, and on short shoots
  • Fruit are little star - or microbe - shaped multiples or capsules densely arranged, could also look like a ball or birds beaks or a ball of bad velcro hooks
