Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are opposite, simple, and situated on short petioles, ovate to lanceolate in shape with an entire margin
  • Fruit are dark blue drupes, more oval in shape than round
  • Twigs are ashy colored when dry, turning green when wet with small green lateral buds and a small terminal bud
  • This small shrub was commonly planted as hedging but is now invasive
