Key Characteristics

  • Alternate, pinnately compound leaves with many leaflets; terminal leaflet smaller than laterals, often absent
  • Twigs with cream-colored chambered pith; upper margin of leaf scar deeply notched, leaf scar U-shaped, resembling a monkey's face but lacking downy pad (eyebrow)
  • Fruit large, spherical, with thick aromatic husk
