Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate and compound - pinnate or bipinnate, generally with very small numerous leaflets
  • Bark has narrow ridges forming thin flat plates
  • Shoots are armed with simple or compound thorns
  • Fruit pods are long, twisted, and aromatic, with many bean shaped seeds
  • These medium sized trees are shade intolerant, and found commonly on second bottoms of flood plain sites
