Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, fan shaped and borne in clusters on short spur shoots
  • The tree is dioecious, the males are commonly planted in cities, the females are less so because they tend to smell bad
  • Fruits have a pulp covered seed
  • Shade intolerant
  • Grows strongly excurrent unless open grown with horizontal lateral branches
