Key Characteristics

  • Leaves opposite, pinnately compound with short-stalked leaflets; leaflets pale or whitish on undersurface
  • Epidermis of twigs (except current year) separating from the shoot and giving a flaky, scaly, or peeling appearance
  • Leaf scars raised at an angle such that the stout, glabrous twigs appear knobby
  • Seed cavity relatively large and cylindrical; wing gradually narrowed at the seed cavity, not extending to the base of the seed
