  • Trailing vine or small, creeping shrub, with upright branches to 30-40 cm high; stems taking root at the notes in most soil.
  • Leaves opposite, simple, 3-8 cm long and 1.5-4 cm wide; obovate, cuneate, obtuse; crenate-serrate; thin; dull light green above, paler beneath; glabrous; petioles short, 2-5 mm long.
  • Twigs green, erect or reclining, 4-sided, sometimes slightly winged.
  • Flowers April-May; insect-pollinated; perfect; borne 1-3 flowers on long pedicelled cymes; very flat, about 6 mm across; greenish yellow with shiny nectary.
  • Fruit a capsule; September; 3-lobed, rough-warty, pink; seeds with scarlet aril.
