Key Characteristics

  • Leaves opposite, simple, serrate with an acuminate tip, elliptic in shape, stalked on short petioles; the leaves turn bright red in fall
  • Fruit a red capsule that turns purple late in the season containing a red to pink aryl
  • Twigs are four-sided with wings made of cork cambium, perhaps a browse deterrent
