Key Characteristics

  • Leaves alternate, simple, variable in shape but generally obovate, serrate, and tough
  • Bark is rectangular and scaly
  • Fruit is a red or yellow pome, seeds are dispersed by birds
  • Shade intolerant and generally found on second bottoms of floodplain sites
  • Twigs with long unbranched thorns, generally red in the new growth and lustrous with red, lustrous, globose buds
  • The tree is medium sized and appears similar to malus in form, tending to be low branching, with a low wide crown
