Key Characteristics

  • Erect, bushy shrub with numerous stems reproducing by basal sprouting
  • Bark smooth, gray
  • Leaves alternate, simple, irregularly doubly-serrate with an acuminate tip, slightly hairy, petioles glandular-bristly
  • Twigs slender, glandular-pubescent with fine, bristly hairs, male catkins conspicuous in fall and winter toward the twig ends
  • Winter buds small, globose, brown, terminal bud absent
  • Fruit a nut in a leafy husk
  • Does well is well drained soils
