Key Characteristics

  • Leaves opposite, simple, with an acuminate tip, arcuate veination
  • Fruit a gray drupe
  • Shade intolerant
  • Commonly found on flood plain sites, tolerant of wet soil
  • Bark on the older part of the plant become striped with lenticels (C. stolonifera remains smooth)
  • Twigs red and pubescent (silky) on the new growth with dingy looking pith (C. stolonifera has bright white pith), lateral buds are appressed
