  • Bark dark gray or brown
  • Young stems yellowish and slightly fissured
  • Leaves whorled or opposite, simple, thick and leathery
  • Twigs slender with prominent vertical lenticels, leaf scars small, yellow pith
  • Buds small, brownish, often sunken and covered by a think layer of bark; terminal bud absent
  • Fruit a multiple of achenes
  • Prefers wet sites
