Key Characteristics

  • Leaves pinnately compound, 5 leaflets; leaflets fringed with minute tufts of white hair
  • Bark in long plates, free at one or both ends and curving outward, giving a shaggy appearance
  • Terminal buds large, with loosely spreading outer scales
  • Nut light yellowish brown, wider than long, thick husk splitting freely to the base and separating completely; kernel sweet
