Key Characteristics

  • Bark tight, shallowly fissured, or not markedly shaggy
  • Twigs slender, more or less glabrous
  • Fruit pear-shaped or rounded with usually thin husk; husk often not splitting completely to the base
  • Terminal bud small, downy, dome-shaped
  • Typical of dry to dry-mesic, upland, oak-hickory forests
