Key Characteristics

  • Leaves are alternate and simple, spatulate with narrow bases, sometimes clustered with a single stipular spine at the base of the attachment
  • Twigs are light brown, ridged, with flourescent yellow pith
  • Fruit is a red clustered berry - like Christmas lights - persisting into the winter
  • This is a small shrub, reproducing by rood sprouting, generally with multiple wide arching stems, moderately shade tolerant
