Key Characteristics

  • Leaves alternate, simple, obovate, large, with an acuminate tip, smelling like motor oil when crushed, netted along the edges
  • Fruit huge and tasty, similar to a banana in shape
  • Shade tolerant (moderately), found on alluvial soils in second bottoms of floodplain sites
  • Twig dark brown and relatively plain, with appressed lateral buds, a pointed, valvate, pubescent, terminal bud
