Key Characteristics

  • Leaves opposite, simple, five-lobed with deep first sinuses, serrate margins except in the sinuses, the leaves are green above and white-silver beneath, with long petioles
  • Bark forming scaly plates with smelly inner bark
  • Fruit a large paired samara attached at a 90 degree angle
  • Shade tolerant, found on on river floodplain sites
  • Twigs red, not lustrous like A. saccharum
  • Information was presented during a Field Lab trip in Fall 2011
