Key Characteristics

  • Tall tree, shade tolerant as a sapling
  • Leaves opposite; blades with 3 main lobes with broad, acute sinuses; sides of middle lobe usually convergent toward the apex, with serrate margins; underside whitish, petiole red
  • Twigs red to gray, lustrous
  • Buds small, blunt, red; flower buds clustered on side shoots
  • Samaras small, wings slightly divergent; disseminated in late spring
  • Frequent in lowland, swampy habitats and adjacent uplands
  • Red clustered flowers, small divergent paired samara
