Notes
Key Characteristics
- Opposite, simple leaves, 5-lobed with narrow tipped teeth
- Petioles and buds exude a milky sap when cut, the terminal buds are broad and blunt with yellowish green or red scales, strongly keeled
- The samaras are large with widely diverging wings - up to 180 degrees
- These medium to large trees cast very dark shade, and are spotted during late summer by a fungus that looks like burn spots on the leaves
- Bark is tight, looking like an overcooked hot dog
